Population vs Targeted Policies
Blunt policies aimed at increasing alcohol prices, reducing the availability of alcohol or restricting alcohol marketing, do not stop problem drinking.
The Australian alcohol industry does not support further extension of whole-of-population policies, regulating price, availability and promotion aimed at reducing overall per capita consumption. These blunt instrument approaches are ineffective, economically devastating and they penalise the vast majority of Australians who drink responsibly.
Instead, ABA advocates for policies that target specific at-risk groups and tailor specific measures to address the problems they are facing.
The industry supports cracking down on violent offenders, using targeted solutions to help problem drinkers or problem venues change their ways.
The industry also supports education based interventions to change the behaviour of the people causing and experiencing problems of alcohol misuse.
